Baruch Dayan HaEmet: Rabbi Reuven Zvi Cohn z"l

10.1.17
The Maimonides School community is deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Rabbi Reuven Zvi Cohn z"l, graduate, teacher, and role model of the school's worldview. Our loss is personal and profound.

Rabbi Cohn personified Maimonides School throughout his entire life. His father, Rabbi Moses J. Cohn z"l, was principal both when Reuven was born in 1948 and when he graduated in 1965. Rabbi Moses J. Cohn retired in 1978, while Reuven's beloved mother Devorah z"l continued her teaching and tireless volunteer service into her 90s.

Rabbi Cohn taught at Maimonides from 1972-1974 and then, after a career in law, joined the Maimonides faculty full-time in 2002, primarily as a teacher of Jewish History. He also taught widely in the community, including for Ma'ayan and Hebrew College's Me'ah program.

Rabbi Cohn had a unique ability to describe the evolution of Maimonides School in a religious, historical, and cultural context. He spoke at major school events and was featured in a documentary film about Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik zt"l, founder of our school.

Our deepest condolences to Rabbi Cohn's wife Rochelle; children Rabbi Naftali Cohn '91 and Beruria Novich '94; and granddaughters Daya '20, Mia '23, and Sarit '25 Novich.

May Hashem console the entire Cohn family among those that mourn for Zion and Jerusalem.
