2006-10-05 Yisroel Meir Goldman told Maimonides Middle and Upper School students at an Oct. 5 assembly that even a small act of chesed can save a life. Then Evie Goldfine stepped forward as living proof.Mrs. Goldfine received a life-saving bone marrow transplant donated by Yisroel, a former Maimonides student and a son of Upper School teacher Rabbi Baruch Goldman. The story was even more powerful for the Maimonides community because Yisroel took part in an August 2003 community screening to identify potential bone marrow donors on behalf of Sharon Steiff, a”h, beloved English teacher at the school for many years. Although Miss Steiff’s transplant was not successful, she often said that she hoped other lives would be saved because of the response to her need. The Goldman-Goldfine match was identified through the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation, and the donor and recipient met for the first time at a special ceremony hosted by Combined Jewish Philanthropies on Oct. 4 after a one-year waiting period required by law.
