Rabbi Jon Bloomberg, long-time Maimonides Upper School Judaic Studies teacher, was one of 67 Jewish educators in North America to receive a Grinspoon-Steinhardt Award for Excellence in Jewish Educations during ceremonies in Los Angeles Nov. 13.

Rabbi Bloomberg is the first teacher from eastern New England to receive the award, which is designed to recognize, honor and support outstanding classroom Jewish educators on the local level. Rabbi Bloomberg was nominated by the Bureau of Jewish Education of Greater Boston, which honored him with one of its Keter Torah Awards last spring.

The presentations were part of the 75th United Jewish Communities General Assembly, an event that brought together more than 5,000 Jewish leaders. The prizes are sponsored by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation and Jewish Life Network/Steinhardt Foundation.

Rabbi Bloomberg said he was impressed with the magnitude of the convocation, and welcomed the opportunity to converse with fellow educators from other parts of the continent. During his time at the assembly, he ran into some of his former students who were there on behalf of Yeshiva University, and connected with other alumni in the Los Angeles area.
